Marine & Lawn Acquires Iconic Greywalls Hotel

Greywalls Hotel, Gullane, East Lothian

One of Scotland’s most iconic golf hotels, Greywalls, has been acquired by Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts, further strengthening the group’s presence in some of the country’s most sought-after golfing destinations.

Overlooking the revered Muirfield links in East Lothian, Greywalls is a grand Edwardian property that has stood as a bastion of elegance and tradition for more than a century. Designed in 1901 by the famed British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the house has operated as a hotel since 1948 and is Category A listed for its national architectural and historic significance.

The property has been owned by the Weaver family for generations, who lovingly preserved its character and charm over the decades. In a statement following the sale, the family described Greywalls as “a treasured family home and business,” expressing hope that the new custodians would “build on that legacy.”

Marine & Lawn confirmed that Greywalls will be subject to a “thoughtful restoration”, led by its in-house design team. Enhancements are planned across the interiors, dining experiences and guest facilities, with a clear intent to retain the building’s rich history while refreshing the hotel for the expectations of the modern luxury traveller.

Importantly, the hotel’s historic relationship with Muirfield will continue. Greywalls has long offered guests privileged access to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, one of the oldest golf clubs in the world. That access will be maintained under the new ownership, preserving Greywalls’ standing as a dream destination for golf enthusiasts from around the globe.

This acquisition joins a growing Scottish portfolio for Marine & Lawn, whose hotels are carefully curated to offer immersive stays rooted in the heritage and landscape of each location. Below is an overview of the group’s other distinctive Scottish properties:

Rusacks St Andrews

Situated beside the 18th fairway of the Old Course, Rusacks St Andrews is a legendary address in the world of golf. The hotel has welcomed golfers, celebrities, and royalty since the late 19th century. Following a major refurbishment by Marine & Lawn, Rusacks now offers a blend of classic architecture and contemporary luxury, with rooms and suites boasting panoramic views over the Old Course and West Sands Beach.

At the heart of the hotel is 18, a rooftop restaurant and bar where guests can enjoy world-class Scottish cuisine while watching play unfold on the most famous finishing hole in golf. The hotel also houses The Bridge and One Under Bar, providing relaxed yet refined food and drink options. Rusacks is not just a hotel, it’s a front-row seat to golf history and a gateway to the vibrant energy of St Andrews.

Originally opened in the late 19th century, the hotel was reimagined by Marine & Lawn with a bold and playful interior design inspired by the sea, the sport, and the town’s Victorian heritage.

With sweeping views across the Firth of Forth and the rugged East Lothian coastline, the hotel is a luxurious base for exploring the area's rich golf offering, including Muirfield, Gullane, Dunbar, Kilspindie and Craigielaw . Guests can unwind at The Lawn, the hotel’s stylish restaurant and bar, or visit the in-house spa and leisure facilities for a touch of indulgence after a day on the links.

Dornoch Station

Marine & Lawn’s northernmost property is Dornoch Station, located just steps from Royal Dornoch, one of the highest-ranked courses in the world. Once a Victorian railway hotel, it has been thoughtfully restored and reimagined with a warm, Highland-inspired aesthetic that nods to its past while providing all the comforts of a modern boutique retreat.

The hotel offers roaring fires, hearty dining, and rooms that blend woollen textures, local materials and inviting design. With easy access not only to Royal Dornoch but also to neighbouring courses like Tain, Brora and Golspie, Dornoch Station is a perfect base for golfers seeking a more remote, rugged Scottish experience. The hotel is also well-placed for exploring the North Coast 500 and the Highlands’ whisky distilleries, making it a firm favourite for both golfers and explorers.
